Ultrasound Abdomen and Pelvis

  • A combined abdomen and pelvis ultrasound is a comprehensive scan that evaluates all the organs in both the abdominal and pelvic regions in a single session. It covers the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, abdominal aorta, uterus, ovaries (in women), bladder, and prostate (in men). This is the most thorough single ultrasound examination and is commonly included in full body health checkup packages. The scan takes 20 to 30 minutes.

More information about test

Why is this test done

• Comprehensive screening of all abdominal and pelvic organs as part of a health checkup
• Investigate generalised abdominal or pelvic pain where the exact source is unclear
• Evaluate multiple organ systems when blood tests show abnormalities in liver, kidney, or other functions
• Screen for gallstones, kidney stones, fatty liver, and pelvic pathology simultaneously
• Pre-surgical assessment when surgery involves the abdominal or pelvic region
• Follow-up evaluation after treatment for conditions affecting multiple organs
• Investigate unexplained bloating, weight changes, or changes in urinary or bowel habits

What does it measure

This combined scan covers all the parameters of both an individual abdominal ultrasound and a pelvic ultrasound. The radiologist evaluates the size, shape, texture, and any abnormalities in the liver (including fatty changes), gallbladder (stones, wall thickening), pancreas, spleen, both kidneys (size, stones, cysts, hydronephrosis), abdominal aorta, uterus (size, fibroids, endometrial thickness), ovaries (cysts, follicles, volume), and bladder (wall thickness, post-void residual). Any free fluid in the abdomen or pelvis is documented.

What to expect during the test

The scan is performed in two parts. In the abdominal portion you lie on your back and the sonographer scans your upper and lower abdomen with a gel-coated transducer. You may be asked to take deep breaths, hold your breath, or turn on your side. The pelvic portion follows while your bladder is still full. After the pelvic images are captured, you will be allowed to empty your bladder. The entire scan takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Our process

We offer both home collection and the option to visit us at our centres.

Once your sample is collected, it is sent to our laboratories to run the tests.

With your sample delivered, we run the test on our machines and analyse it.

With the analyses done, we prepare a report that describes in detail the result.
