Doppler Ultrasound
A Doppler ultrasound is a specialised scan that evaluates blood flow through your blood vessels. It uses the Doppler effect — the change in frequency of sound waves as they bounce off moving red blood cells — to measure the speed and direction of blood flow. It can detect blockages, narrowing, blood clots, and abnormal circulation. In pregnancy, it assesses blood flow through the umbilical cord and fetal vessels. No fasting is typically required.

Why is this test done
• Detect blood clots in veins (deep vein thrombosis / DVT)
• Evaluate blood flow in leg arteries for peripheral arterial disease
• Assess blood flow to and from the kidneys (renal Doppler)
• Evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries (neck) to assess stroke risk
• Monitor blood flow through the umbilical cord during pregnancy
• Assess fetal wellbeing in high-risk pregnancies through umbilical artery and middle cerebral artery Doppler
• Evaluate varicose veins and venous insufficiency
• Assess blood flow to transplanted organs
• Investigate erectile dysfunction caused by vascular issues
What does it measure
The scan measures blood flow velocity, direction, and resistance in the targeted blood vessels. Colour Doppler produces a colour map showing the direction of blood flow — typically red for flow towards the transducer and blue for flow away. Spectral Doppler displays a waveform graph of flow velocities over time. Key measurements include peak systolic velocity, end diastolic velocity, and resistance index. In pregnancy, the pulsatility index and resistance index of the umbilical artery, middle cerebral artery, and uterine arteries are measured to assess fetal and placental health.
What to expect during the test
The procedure is similar to a standard ultrasound. You lie on an examination table and gel is applied to the area being examined. The transducer is placed over the relevant blood vessels. You may hear a swooshing sound — this is the audio representation of blood flowing through the vessels, which is completely normal. The scan is painless. For leg vessel assessments, you may be asked to stand or flex your foot. For abdominal Doppler, you may need to hold your breath momentarily. The scan takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area being examined.
Our process
We offer both home collection and the option to visit us at our centres.
Once your sample is collected, it is sent to our laboratories to run the tests.
With your sample delivered, we run the test on our machines and analyse it.
With the analyses done, we prepare a report that describes in detail the result.
