The key diagnostic tests that can catch health problems early and help you stay ahead of lifestyle diseases
Why Regular Blood Tests Matter After 30
Your 30s are when the cumulative effects of lifestyle choices begin to show up in your blood work. Years of dietary habits, stress, sedentary behaviour, and sleep patterns start influencing your metabolic markers. The challenge is that most conditions — high cholesterol, prediabetes, thyroid imbalances, vitamin deficiencies, and early kidney or liver changes — develop silently, without any obvious symptoms for years.
A routine blood test panel is like an early warning system for your body. It costs a fraction of what treating an advanced disease would, and it gives your doctor actionable data to guide lifestyle recommendations or catch conditions when they are most treatable.
At Lotus Diagnostic, we recommend that every adult over 30 gets a comprehensive blood test panel at least once a year, and more frequently if they have risk factors like a family history of diabetes, heart disease, or thyroid disorders.
1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The Complete Blood Count is the most fundamental blood test and should be part of every annual checkup. It analyses the three main types of cells in your blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Red blood cell measurements (haemoglobin, RBC count, haematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC) reveal whether you have anaemia, which is remarkably common in India, particularly among women. Low haemoglobin causes fatigue, weakness, and reduced concentration that many people attribute to stress or poor sleep when the real culprit is iron deficiency or vitamin B12 deficiency.
White blood cell counts indicate how well your immune system is functioning. Elevated WBC counts can signal infections, inflammation, or in rare cases, blood disorders. Low counts may indicate immune suppression.
Platelet counts affect your blood’s ability to clot. Abnormalities in platelet levels can indicate conditions ranging from viral infections (like dengue, which commonly causes low platelet counts) to bone marrow disorders.
Available at Lotus Diagnostic: CBC with ESR. Results same day.
2. Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Test)
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in India, and it is striking people at younger ages than ever before. A lipid profile is your primary screening tool for cardiovascular risk.
This panel measures total cholesterol, LDL (often called “bad” cholesterol because it contributes to plaque buildup in arteries), HDL (“good” cholesterol that helps remove LDL from arteries), triglycerides, and the cholesterol-to-HDL ratio. Together, these numbers paint a detailed picture of your cardiovascular risk.
Many people in their 30s are surprised to find elevated LDL or triglycerides, even if they feel healthy. Dietary changes, regular exercise, and in some cases medication can correct these numbers before they lead to atherosclerosis, heart attacks, or strokes.
Available at Lotus Diagnostic: Lipid Profile. Fasting required (8–10 hours).
3. Blood Sugar Tests (Fasting + HbA1c)
India is sometimes called the diabetes capital of the world. With over 100 million diagnosed diabetics and a similar number with prediabetes, the probability that your blood sugar is higher than you think is significant, especially after 30.
A fasting blood sugar test gives you a snapshot of your glucose level after an overnight fast. An HbA1c test tells you what your average blood sugar has been over the past 2 to 3 months. Together, they give a comprehensive picture of your glucose metabolism.
Catching prediabetes (fasting sugar between 100 and 125 mg/dL, or HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4%) is enormously valuable because lifestyle interventions at this stage — better diet, more movement, weight management — can prevent progression to full diabetes in many cases.
Available at Lotus Diagnostic: Fasting Blood Sugar, HbA1c, Diabetes Profile Basic (36 parameters)
4. Thyroid Profile (T3, T4, TSH)
Thyroid disorders are among the most underdiagnosed conditions in India. The thyroid gland controls your metabolism, energy levels, weight, mood, heart rate, and body temperature. When it underperforms (hypothyroidism) or overperforms (hyperthyroidism), the effects are widespread but often mistaken for other issues.
Hypothyroidism is particularly common in women and can cause unexplained weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, constipation, and depression. Many people live with these symptoms for years without realising a simple blood test could identify the cause.
The thyroid profile measures three hormones: T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine), and TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). TSH is the most sensitive marker — elevated TSH usually indicates the thyroid is underactive, while suppressed TSH suggests overactivity.
Available at Lotus Diagnostic: Thyroid Profile (T3, T4, TSH). No fasting required.
5. Liver Function Test (LFT)
Your liver performs over 500 functions, from filtering toxins and metabolising medications to producing bile for digestion and storing vitamins. Despite its resilience, the liver is vulnerable to damage from alcohol, fatty foods, medications, infections (hepatitis), and metabolic conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which has become increasingly common in urban India.
A liver function test measures enzymes (SGPT/ALT, SGOT/AST, ALP), proteins (total protein, albumin, globulin), and bilirubin levels. Elevated enzymes can indicate liver inflammation or damage, while abnormal protein ratios may suggest chronic liver disease.
NAFLD in particular is a growing concern. It is estimated to affect 9% to 32% of the Indian population and is closely linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Early detection through liver function tests allows intervention before the condition progresses to cirrhosis.
Available at Lotus Diagnostic: Liver Function Test. Results same day.
Bonus: Additional Tests to Consider
Kidney Function Test (KFT)
Measures creatinine, urea, BUN, uric acid, and electrolytes to assess how well your kidneys are filtering waste. Especially important if you have diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease. Available at Lotus Diagnostic Centre with same day results.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in India despite abundant sunshine, affecting up to 70–90% of the population by some estimates. Low vitamin D contributes to bone weakness, fatigue, muscle pain, and immune dysfunction. Available at Lotus Diagnostic Centre with same day results.
Vitamin B12
B12 deficiency is common among vegetarians and vegans since B12 is primarily found in animal products. Deficiency causes fatigue, numbness and tingling in hands and feet, balance problems, and memory issues. Available at Lotus Diagnostic Centre with same day results.
Iron Profile
Iron deficiency anaemia is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies globally and is particularly prevalent among Indian women. An iron profile (serum iron, TIBC, ferritin) provides a more detailed picture than haemoglobin alone. Available at Lotus Diagnostic Centre with same day results.
How Often Should You Get Tested?
Age 30–40, no risk factors: Annual comprehensive blood test covering all 5 tests above.
